Student Press: Yesterday, today, in the future

Α short description of what happened

At the beginning of the school year, students were informed about the aims, the tasks and the objective of the project and they were asked if they wanted to participate in it. Teachers of the two schools had to create e-classes to upload all the documents, homework, exercises, give the necessary links and directions.

During the chemistry and biology classes, the students studied the chemical composition of the paper and became aware of the recycling part (advantages, disadvantages, benefits). They then made recycled paper from old newspapers and also used them to make masks. As homework, students were asked to create a poster using the photo of the masks they created in order to raise public awareness of environmental issues.

Students of both schools were given scanned documents of Andritsaina’s Student Press from 1934 until 1982 and they had to study and compare them with today’s student electronic press of the two schools. They came to conclusions about the differences in style, interests, linguistic issues, themes and other over time changes. After learning the code of journalistic deontology, and studying some interviews, they were asked to do some homework on journalistic terminology and on interviewing politicians.

They also watched the film “the Flea” about a young journalist living in a village and making effort to write and send his own newspaper all over the country.

Students of Andritsaina’s General Upper High School and Ilion’s 5th General Upper High School had some online warm up activities and discussed not only about journalism, but also about life in a village and life in town. They also had to answer to the question “How will Student Journalism be in the future?  During the discussion between the students two crucial questions were raised: How could they be protected from exposing themselves to the web, since they are underage and how could a student with speech disabilities interview someone?

An Internet event called "Love Responsibility" took place via the on-line Webex platform.

At the first part of it, May 13, 2020, we started with "Tribute to the Andritsaina’s Student Journalism from 1934 to the Present". As an answer to the above posed questions, we continued with the online journalism workshop "Technology in Journalism" during which students learned and experimented on how to make their own avatars in order to represent them as digital journalists. They also experimented on screen recording programs.

At the second part of it, May 15, 2020, the Environmental Team of Andritsaina’s General Upper High School presented the video "The Responsibility" giving an ecological message for the protection of the environment and the recycling of paper. After that, the digital journalists (avatars) of the two schools interviewed both the film director of “The Flea” Mr. Spyrou and the journalist Mr. Tsigouris who -when he was a young journalist of Andritsaina’s school- motivated Mr Spyrou to make the film. Then, participants watched the documentary "New Horizons", a collaboration of Andritsaina’s school with the Youth Plan.

These events were also attended by Educational project coordinators having the pedagogical and/or scientific responsibility of the two school regions (Mrs. Anna Georgakopoulou, Mrs. Magdalene Kokkaliari, Dimitris Semitekos and Dr. Spyridon Papadakis, Organizational Coordinator of PE.KE.S. Western Greece who coordinated the discussion) who made presentations on the theme and other coordinators.

The event was welcomed by the Regional Director of Primary and Secondary Education of Western Greece Dr. K. Giannopoulos

On June 12, the internet online event: "A Circle Closes", took place on the occasion of June 4, World Day Against Aggression against Children and June 5, World Environment Day.

The event began with the screening of the video "The show begins" where the digital journalists-avatars made by the students presented a short online interview they had prepared for the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education, expressing their worries and concerns. The General Secretary of Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. A. Gika, responded to the interview as a representative of the Ministry of Education, who gave warm congratulations and spoke with particularly flattering words about the high level of innovative actions of the network.

The event ended with the projection of the short film "Reach Where You Can't ", a production (2010) of the Student Network "Wild Paintbrushes" in collaboration with the Hellenic Cinema Center.

At the end of the teaching scenario, students were asked to fill in CoI (Community Inquiry) to evaluate Social, Cognitive and Teaching Presence. The statistical processing of the questionnaire will be done by the students of the Ilion 5th General Upper High School, during the Math lesson at the chapter of statistics.
