Progetto Officine DigitalArch
Abstract

The OFFICINE DIGITALARCH PROJECT, is a tool through which students can acquire disciplinary skills and an active involvement in terms of space design, exhibitions, workshops, hypermedia communication, networks and digital innovation. The Artistic Musical High School Foiso Fois of Cagliari, through a National Operative Plan Project, has created a "Training workshop of Architecture".

The OFFICINE DIGITALARCH PROJECT, through openness and comparison with external experiences, aim to innovate educational contents and approaches and to improve the opening of the school to the territory, in order to widen the educational offer, through extracurricular actions of laboratory type. In its objectives and aims, the Project incorporates and aim to align itself with the cultural and training objectives useful to bring young people closer to cultural heritage and educating them to its protection through a virtuous path of knowledge and enhancement, developing in them both a digital culture for the preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, and the awareness that contemporary digital culture also produces cultural heritage, and transmitting to them the value that heritage has for the communities of the present and future. The project wants to offer an alternative model: acting from secondary school onwards, it wants to offer a vision of cultural and artistic heritage as a system of new related professions and digital technologies to help break down cultural barriers.

Description of the practice

The training workshop dispose of the "Ancient Repair shops" which can be defined as important spaces for the school community, but also for a union with other cultural activities in the metropolitan area of Cagliari. The portion of the city's territory defined by the area that includes both the church and the convent of San Lucifero (our headquarters) and the adjacent basilica of San Saturno, can be defined as of high historical/architectural and archaeological interest. The presence also in the surrounding area of the Parco delle Rimembranze and the EXMA Cultural Centre and last but not least the complex in Via Logudoro with the new Hotel and the Theatre undergoing renovation, make this ancient industrial architecture the focus of a series of potentials that are intended to arise with this project. The study of the "Ancient Repair shops", flanked by innovative elaborations, such as surveys and virtual 3D rendering with immersive visualization and Augmented Reality, represent the "training" elaboration for the students of the Foiso Fois High School, also to relaunch the strategies that promote the different forms of active citizenship, combining urban regeneration and exhibition projects of new performative and museum concepts.

Learning Outcomes

Through the survey and understanding of the spaces, we then moved on to the practical aspect of conception and design for their requalification: common, playful and recreational spaces in outdoor spaces, as well as exhibition spaces, conference and concert halls, reading spaces, fablab, mobile workshops and innovative environments in the Ancient Repair shops.

In April, despite the Coronavirus, students were involved in the provincial selection of the Digital School Award, banned by the Ministry of Education in Italy. The competition was streamed and after the screening of the 3-minute video a 2-minute Pitch was made and then they answered the questions of the Commission. The fourth grade of Architecture won the First Prize.

One of the main priority of the project is to carry on the Officine DigitalArch Project in order to raise the awareness of the pre-established Authorities with expressions of interest for the implementation and completion of the works necessary for the use of the "Ancient Repair Shops" spaces necessary for the school as laboratory spaces and for the required "social distancing" post pandemic Covid19.
