General Info
Career development is a lifelong process, and addressing issues related to STE(A)M career development should begin early in K–12 schooling. The early adolescent years are an especially critical time in development when students are forming beliefs about themselves as learners along with academic and career-related goals. School counselors are important conveyers of information and attitudes, and explicit and implicit messages can have powerful effects on students’ dispositions and behaviors, especially in the area of STE(A)M career development, where females and underrepresented minority students still struggle to gain access to opportunities. Early perceptions and experiences can impact students ‘specific career and academic choices, and the goal for school counselors should be to ensure that their students have as large a set of options as possible and avoid early circumscription. School counselors can improve STE(A)M career development for all students by helping them to improve their academic achievement and self-efficacy, to develop positive outcome expectations for STE(A)M coursework and careers and by guiding them toward accurate, unstereotyped beliefs regarding STEM identity.
