B3.2.c: Critical reflection on career paths

Submitted by @dmin on Wed, 25/08/2021 - 14:52

During this module, you were invited to reconsider how you see work, what is a career, how to explore STE(A)M careers and what your role might be in career guidance. What are your main takeaways from these discussions?

Was there something that surprised you? Is there something that you would like to explore more? Is there specific support that you need? What is something that you feel well prepared to implement?

Please share your thoughts! After posting your response, please offer feedback on the reflections of at least one other course participant.

B3.2.b: Exploring STE(A)M careers

Ιn order to support your students, you should give them concrete representations of what specific STE(A)M careers look like.

One resource that you could use is https://icould.com/, which offers video resources that describe hundreds of professions, in the words of those who practice them. Here is an example: Curator for the science museum- https://icould.com/stories/yasmin-k/

B3.2.a: The teacher’s role in career guidance

As teachers, you are playing a key role in the shaping of the career paths of your students. A recent leaflet by Education Services Australia (Hooley, 2021) gives a synthetic overview of the roles you can take in supporting them. It describes four types of contributions that you can have: be a role model, be willing to talk, make links to careers in your teaching and contribute to the career education programme.
