Competence Needs and Professional Development of STE(A)M Educators

The event, organised within the All Digital Week campaign, highlights the central role of educators and aims to support them in implementing STE(A)M education. It will discuss how the STEAMonEdu Erasmus+ KA3 project addresses the competence needs and professional development of STE(A)M educators.

During the event, the key activities, findings and outputs of the STEAMonEdu project will be presented. The agenda highlights the three aspects of the project, namely:

• Community: Teachers and educators are given a central role as members of a community that is supported by an online platform in collecting best practices, designing educational scenarios, discussing the necessary competences and sharing experience.
• Ecosystem: The STE(A)M competence framework details the competences necessary for implementing STE(A)M education leading to the the STE(A)M educator profile and supporting a STE(A)M-readiness self-assessment tool for educators and organizations, while the STE(A)M education framework describes the related methodologies, body of knowledge, OERs and practices.
• Professional development of teachers and educators: The project will deliver a training course, which includes a MOOC that is based on the STE(A)M competence framework, supplemented by a blended course that will result in the collaborative development of STE(A)M learning activity templates and projects.

On 26 March 2021, 153 participants joined our STEAMonEdu webinar “Competence Needs and Professional Development of STE(A)M Educators“, organised by the Consortium as part of the All Digital Week 2021 campaign.

The event participants were welcomed by CEO of ALL DIGITAL Peter Palvolgyi, who introduced the ALL DIGITAL network activities and the campaign.

At the event, we presented the key activities, findings and outputs of our STEAMonEdu project. Prof Achilles Kameas from the project coordinating organisation CTI – DAISSy Research Group gave the overview of the project and moderated the event.

The event highlighted the three main aspects of the project:

• Ecosystem.  The STE(A)M competence framework, which was presented by Natalya Spyropolou of CTI, details the competences necessary for implementing STE(A)M education leading to the the STE(A)M educator profile and supporting a STE(A)M-readiness self-assessment tool for educators and organizations.
  
  Mihai Iacob from EOS Romania Foundation talked about the STE(A)M education framework that describes the related methodologies, body of knowledge, Open Educational Resources (OERs), and practices.

• Professional development of teachers and educators: The project will deliver a training course, which includes a MOOC that is based on the STE(A)M competence framework, supplemented by a blended course that will result in the collaborative development of STE(A)M learning activity templates and projects. Ioannis Zaharakis of CTI introduced participants to the STEAMonEdu training offer consisting of the MOOC and the blended learning course, with detailed description of specific areas covered in each week of the MOOC. Assessment of Transversal Skills in STEM is an innovative policy experimentation project conducted across 8 EU countries and involving 12 educational institutions. It aims to enhance digital assessment of students’ transversal skills in STEM. Drawing on key ideas and theories of STEM educational policy, formative assessment, use of digital learning tools, and integrated STEM education the project developed an overarching conceptual framework that underpinned a training and development programme for teachers. Teachers in 107 schools in seven European countries worked with teacher mentors to help teachers reflect on and develop their teaching practices to teach students key STEM skills via learning projects aiming to have a real-work impact and address the UN’s sustainable development goals.

EDEN, European Distance E-learning Network, has organised the webinar ‘Assessment of STEM transversal skills from conceptual framework to real- world problems’ on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, at 17:00 CET.

The session will consist of presentations followed by a discussion

This presentation will feature tales spun from theoretical frameworks to classroom practices. Dr. Eamon Costello will first give an overview of the project and discuss the topic of real-world skills, a concept of contestation in the STEM educational discourse. Following the overview, Dr Eva Hartell will present the project implementation in Sweden where the research team worked in partnership with schools and parents on projects that allowed students to explore and affect their real world. Lastly, teacher Alberto Sacido will share an inspirational story of the ATS STEM pilot implementation undertaken in Rosalía de Castro High School, Spain, with his enterprising students in a project about Covid-19.
